Enslavement by piracy in Rome
In the Roman empire one could be enslaved upon being kidnapped by pirates or robbers; my question is, why was it impossible for a kidnapped person to prove that he was a freeman? Was it due to lack of communication between the different provinces of the Roman empire, or was it legally impossible for a slave to challenge his status?
