Got in a car accident (not at fault), what further steps should I take? (CAN)
Approximately 2 weeks ago, I was involved in a head on head collision. The accident was clearly the other parties fault and had 4 witnesses on the scene offer to be a witness. A claim to ICBC (insurance company) has been made, and their estimators have concluded that my car will be a write off.
Now they have called and advised that their payout amount will be $xxxx.xx. This offer is clearly a low ball (No way I could re-purchase the same car), and the only injuries I took away from the incident is whiplash (neck stiffness).
The interesting portion is that the party at fault had at the time:
- No driver's license (on him)
- No insurance
- Unregistered vehicle (License plate did not belong to him).
How should I prepare myself for when the insurance company contacts me back? Besides finding listings of a better, more reasonable price to settle on, what else is there I can do? I was told that perhaps having a lawyer handle this could be a better route, as well as handle any claims regarding my injury.
I just want to make sure that I get compensated properly as this has been a huge inconvenience for something that was 0% my fault and don't want to come out of this regretting something.
