Super badly in need of advice as beginning to look at graduate school
Hey there! Thanks in advance for looking at this because I'm totally at a loss right now. I have read a bunch of threads on this subreddit, but my situation is somewhat out of the ordinary and I could really use some targeted advice.
I have a B.A. in Literature. Following graduation, I completed two years of AmeriCorps service. The first (which is what made me decide to totally change my path), was NCCC which does a variety of projects, but by chance almost all of mine happened to tie in with parks/environmental work (invasive species removal at National Parks, trail work for the BLM/Forest Service, a stream restoration project, working at a CA historic park, etc).
The second was a watershed stewardship program where I did stream monitoring and environmental education. So I have nearly two years of somewhat relevant field work but am also not qualified for a ranger job (or at least, no one would ever choose me over someone who had done parks work) currently since I've never held exactly that sort of position and obviously not academically qualified.
It's been indicated to me that having a master's definitely helps you be more competitive, particularly on the NPS level, so I've been planning on going for a graduate degree in ecology. Plus, just because I'd genuinely like to be more knowledgeable on these topics. Figuring out how to get into that sort of program coming from literature is feeling pretty overwhelming though of course I could try and find a faculty member at the school I'm aiming for (UNC Chapel Hill) to give me some advice on that front.
I'd like to become a naturalist/interpretive ranger--though am also very open to resource management (as in conservation/restoration) work, there are just so many more interp positions I thought aiming for that was smartest. And I do enjoy education/interface with public, as much as I also enjoy field work. Not sure how attainable resource management positions are. If those positions do exist, should I be going to school for botany instead of ecology since work to do with plants is my area of interest? This is why I feel so lost!
I also just feel like I'm not really competitive since I don't have enough experience/internships, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to get into these. I'm not even qualified for most of the SCA internships I've seen.
Anyway sorry for the long rant. TL;DR: English major. Nearly two years of somewhat relevant environmental fieldwork. Utterly lost as to what next steps to take/how to take them.
