"From each according to his ability, to each according to his need": The four quadrants and the issues they have.
Hi everyone!
I was thinking about this famous quote and how it would be applied and realised that encouraging a society to comply with this ideology (which as far as I'm aware is what communism will eventually entail) will divide it into four groups. These are as follows:
-
Those who contribute a lot but also require a lot: No one will have any issues with this group as what you put in is what you get out. There is no surplus value here. They are paid according to their contribution.
-
Those who contribute little but also require little: Same as above, some people might resent their small contribution but given they do not use much it will be tolerated.
This leaves us with the two contentious groups:
-
Those who contribute a lot and use little: These people are likely to be the major workhorses of society and who pick up slack. The issue is they will be exploited similar to a capitalist system where their surplus value will be taken by society instead of being given to them. This has the potential to breed resentment and feelings of exploitation.
-
Contributes little but uses the most: The vast majority of this group will be the elderly and the very young, as well as the disabled. Those with mental illness or addiction will also likely be in this group though presumably there will be adequate resources to treat them under communism so they will not stay in this quadrant long enough to be an issue. Though where there are people who use more than they contribute, there will also be resentment. This is a major issue as those perceived as 'lazy' will likely be resented, particularly by the workhorse quadrant.
The final picture is not one of unity but of resentment.
Is my understanding correct? How will society adjust for these sentiments?
