I tend to challenge my friends ideas and they automatically think I support the opposite view. Any ideas to better discuss ideas in depth without letting this happen.

To explain more in depth, I hang out with many friends who believe in what they talk about. Some stuff a little crazier than others and I know as long as I can see their thought process I can get a glimpse of how they see it.

I am not judgemental, but I do play devil's advocate quite often with them. Stuff like extreme religious beliefs, steroid use, liquid based diets, politics(far left and far right) among others are being discussed.

I like thinking, and the process behind it. I also like making people think. But this can go wrong, and rub my friends the wrong way. I was called a socialist while discussing politics, unopened minded discussing steroid use, understanding that how Hilary Clinton is handling her campaign makes sense with the aftermath of the server scandal makes me a supporter of her campaign.

None of those things are true about me. But I believe if you have a strong idea, back it up.

Some friends are more aware than others of what I'm doing and comply. I'm not sneaky about it. I'm not trying to be an asshole either.

I'm aware that I just don't know everything and I want to know more details.

I tend to be more analytical than emotional when it comes to logic.

Now people who talk about ideas, controversial or not, what experiences have helped you with your in-depth talks with your buddies?
