[Help] Potentially getting a cat soon, I need advice on how to ease both my dog and the cat into living together.
It's a weird situation, but basically the same shelter I got my dog, Nora, from is trying to give away a cat that no one seems to want. It's been there for months, it's just insanely shy, and it's a "common" color for cats, so it's not exotic enough for some people. For me on the other hand...I think she's gorgeous!
I try not to humanize my dog too much, but I'm worried about her being upset at another animal in her space, taking up my attention. I should add that Nora absolutely loves cats, even more than most dogs. My apartment complex has several friendly strays that wander around, and whenever she spots one, she trots over, tail wagging, and leans in for a good sniff. She has a weirdly low prey drive, birds and squirrels frequently run right in front of her and she just acts confused. We also frequently stay over at my parent's house, and they have two cats that Nora loves. She likes to sniff them for a minute, then ignore them for the rest of the weekend.
The main thing that worries me is resource guarding. Nora does resource guard, but it's not to the point of snapping or biting. We're in a good position where she never is around small kids or anyone that would try to grab something away from her, so it's never really been a priority. What she has done, though, is at my parent's house, whenever the cats would get within 2-3 feet of her food bowl, she'd hop off the couch and fast-walk over to her bowl, almost like she was chasing them away. She never growled or ran, it was just a weird fast walk. Right now I leave her dish out all day, she gets fed once in the morning and once at night, and she just grazes throughout the day. I'm considering having set mealtimes where I place her food down for 15 minutes and then pick it up, but I'm worried about encouraging her to wolf down her food and resource guard even more.
I'm sorry, I didn't intend for this to get so long, I'm just overthinking things! I'd appreciate any thoughts or input anyone can give me. Cheers!
