So this was my first SU fanfic, please tell me how you people like it I'll make more depending on the feedback! ^^ (The story was written in tumblr but the text changes don't come up here, I also got pretty lazy towards the ending. Sorry!)

Steven universe fanfic. Synopsis: Steven waits for the Crystal gems to be done with their ‘jobs’ as things take a turn for the worst with Garnet and Steven. ‘It’s finally my turn to become the protector, don’t worry Ruby & Sapphire. I’ll keep you safe’

-Steven cups Sapphire and Ruby’s gem in his hands and keeps them in his cheese burger backpack until they regenerate.-

Earlier that day

-Teleportation pad to the house activates as Garnet steps out of the stream.-

‘Garnet, Garnet! You’re finally back! What took you so long?’ Steven says with a smile on his face.

Garnet overwhelmed by her long search pats Steven on his head gently as she sits down on the couch, Steven sits with her. Garnet lets out a sigh of frustration

-Sigh- ‘Hello, Steven.’

‘What took you so long to come back, Garnet?’

‘Nothing, Steven.’ Garnet says to prevent Steven from worrying about her.

‘It’s Malachite…Isn’t it, Garnet? I thought we told you we’d all search for her together! You can’t just go off by yourself what if you ended up finding her? Then what would you have done? Remember the last time even you struggled to fight the clone that Lapis created?’ Steven says with tears dripping from his face.

‘I can handle them myself.’ Garnet says while trying to not cry herself.

‘You can’t and you know you can’t Garnet! Stop trying to be strong around me it doesn’t work. But if it will make you happy’ Steven stands up and holds out his has hand while saying ‘At least let me go with you this time.’ with a look of determination on his face.

Garnet looks into Steven eyes and sees nothing but a burning passion to help out his friend

‘We’ll find her, trust me.’

‘Ok, Steven. Let’s do this then!’ As Garnet stands up she thinks to herself. ‘Steven’s growing up to be a fine young man. He’s sure to save people one day we just know it.’ Garnet suddenly stops in her tracks ‘Wait Steven, what about Pearl and Amethyst?’

‘Oh, right! haha!’ Steven says with a smile on his face ‘About that…Well Pearl is out doing some errands and Amethyst is too busy eating food.. You know how she gets with her food so I’d rather not disturb her..’

‘I suppose so, ok let’s get going then. Did you bring your cheese burger backpack? Never know what we may need in there, since it was so helpful the last time’

Steven gasps ‘You’re right, Garnet!’ Steven runs up the stairs to grab his cheese burger backpack full of novelty items and food for the long journey ahead. As Steven rushes back down the stairs to get to the teleportation pad while rushing to put on the shoulder straps.* ‘OK, Ready!’

Garnet chuckles to herself ‘You’re always so energetic Steven.’

‘You know it!’

Garnet realizes ‘Wait Steven where are we going to look?’

Steven says while blushing with embarrassment. ‘Remember that spire that I accidentally sunk when I didn’t bring the totem with us? That’s where we should look, I mean if I was a giant 6 legged fusion that’s where I’d hide’

Garnet shrugs ‘Can’t argue with that logic, alright. Let’s get going.’

-Teleportation pad activates-

-Garnet and Steven both arrive at the sunken sea spire-

‘You know, Garnet. I think Pearl was wrong about this place.’

‘Huh?’ Garnet says with a confused look on her face

‘This place looks much better underwater rather than all the water being pushed away from the spire.’

‘I guess so, Steven.’

‘Wait a second..’ Garnet says before quickly rushing to put on a diving gear for Steven ‘Phew..’ Garnet says with a sigh of relief

‘Nice thinking, Garnet! haha!’ Steven says ignoring he was seconds away from drowning

‘You’re not at all phased by what just happened?’ Garnet asks shockingly

‘By what?’ Steven says confusingly

‘Never mind, Steven!’ Garnet says with a smile on her face ‘He’s always so innocent I’m gunna miss that about him when he grows up.’ Garnet thinks to herself

‘Garnet.’

‘Yes, Steven?’

‘Do you feel that eerie presence?’

‘You feel it too, huh?’

‘Yeah I’ve been feeling it for a while now, but you just seemed so focused on your thoughts I didn’t wana disturb you.’

‘Don’t worry Steven. You don’t disturb me during my thoughts if anything it’s reassuring’ Garnet says while trying to keep cool near Steven

‘Garnet…’ Steven says as he is overcome with worry and points into the distance

Garnet notices the rapidly approaching monster, Garnet quickly tries to separate Steven and herself from the monster but to no avail, it’s too fast. As the monster charges at them they catch glimpse of a gem. Steven realizes what’s going to happen and activates his shield, the monster and Garnet & Steven collide, the collision ends up creating a shock wave that sends ripples throughout the ocean. Pearl coming back from her errands notices the change in the oceans waves and starts to worry as she rushes back to the home only to see Amethyst lounging on the couch stuffing her face with chips.

‘I notissed the rifels too’ Amethyst says with a mouth full of chips.

‘This can’t be good.’ Pearl is over come with grief and starts checking the house for signs of Garnet & Steven but to no avail.

‘AMETHYSTTT! WHERE ARE STEVEN & GARNET?!’ Pearl screams at the top of her lungs.

‘Dunno…Actually I did hear the teleportation pad activate and Garnet saying something just before it went off, reckon that has anything to do with them?’ Amethyst says while jumping off the couch to dust off the excess bits of chips all over her pants and tank top.

‘Amethyst…we’re leaving STRAIGHT AWAY.’ Pearl says while screaming again

‘OK PEARL I CAN HEAR YOU. I’M RIGHT HERE. I MIGHT BE DUMB BUT I’M NOT DEAF. THAT IS A DEFINITE.’ Amethyst returns the screams

‘I…sorry, Amethyst.’ Pearl realizes her error

‘How do you suppose we find them, Pearl?’

‘I don’t know. But if I had to guess since Garnet had been out for a couple days searching for Malachite I’d have to guess it has something to do with her..’

‘She must have taken Steven with her as well..This can’t be good at all. Malachite is too unstable and far too strong for both of them if they find her.. We have to go now, Amethyst.’

Sigh ‘Fine’ Amethyst says with a annoyed tone.*

‘Where do you reckon they went?’ Amethyst says*

‘Well if once again if I had to guess the only place that she hasn’t been is in the lowest depth of the antarctic or the sunken sea spire.. Best to check the antarctic first just in case.’

‘Ok, you follow the way then.’

‘Oh be quiet, Amethyst’

‘What? I’m just too lazy to split up and look besides you’re a better swimmer than I am..’

Pearl grunts under her breath

‘Let’s just hurry up and leave. We’re wasting too much time’

Meanwhile Garnet and Steven are having their own struggle dealing with Malachite

‘Argh, Steven what are we gunna do? You’re bubble can’t hold on for much longer’ Garnet says while struggling to keep her ground while in the bubble

‘I have no idea Garnet but we can’t hold out for much longer..’ Steven says under clenched teeth while trying to focus on holding up the bubble

Malachite swims past Steven and Garnet while using the speed to knock the bubble into a wall. The bubble starts cracking.

‘Uhh Garnet…’ Steven says with worry*

‘I know!’ Garnet notices the problem aswell*

‘I think there is only one thing I can do for us. Garnet has no use underwater she can’t punch anything and the water slows down her speed. I think we need to unfuse and handle this with our individual powers, Sapphire.’ Ruby says to Sapphire

‘I don’t think that’s a very good idea, Ruby. You see the visions too. Not just me, there aren’t many possibilities for failure and even if we do unfuse and somehow manage to beat her what if our gems crack? Or worse they…’

Ruby cuts off Sapphire ‘Don’t even say that. You know we can do it, our individual power is pretty devastating when we let them. We can do this, just trust in me.

‘I trust you..’

Garnet unfuses and Ruby and Sapphire appear before Steven

‘Gar…gar..garnet? I mean uhh Ruby, Sapphire! You’re both here! But why?!’ *Steven says with shock and grief appearing on his face’

‘Ruby thought it would be a good idea if we both unfused and dealt with Malachite using our individual power, Steven be ready to turn off your bubble and turn it back on again’ Sapphire says while focusing on Malachite*

‘I’ll…I’ll try.’

‘Ready Steven?!’ ‘DO IT NOW!’

Steven releases the bubble allowing Ruby and Sapphire to drop to the bottom of the ocean while Malachite circles the area.

‘You ready Ruby?’ Sapphire says while staring at Malachite.

‘Ready? baby please, I’m fired up!’ Ruby says with a smirk on her face*

Steven reactivates his bubble but does it to a much smaller scale, Ruby burns the surrounding water around her resulting in a square battlefield looking area.

‘The water is boiling so fast that it’s evaporating even at this kind of depth Ruby is able to do that?’ Steven says while being astonished by the raw power of Ruby and Sapphire*

Sapphire freezes the remaining area and ground to resemble an underwater ice chamber, the ice has been made to be 10 inches thick in order to keep the water out. Malachite being unable to swim starts charging at Sapphire and Ruby, Ruby seeing this uses her gauntlet and charges at Malachite using full force slamming both her and Malachite into the frozen wall. Ruby melts the wall of ice allowing water to fall, Malachite using this to her advantage begins to shackle Ruby on to the ground and uses the water to start charging at Sapphire. Sapphire seeing this freezes the remaining water and uses the ice to block her path.

‘Ruby come on’ Sapphire stares at Ruby on the ground ‘RUBY GET UP RIGHT NOW’

Ruby hears the yell coming from Sapphire and jumps up seeing Malachite using the water as a piercing force through the ice wall. Ruby starts punching Malachite using her gauntlets.

‘It’s not enough! Steven help us! We need your shield!’ Ruby says while pummeling away at Malachite trading blows*

‘But, but I don’t even know if I can summon my shield after using my bubble for so long…’ Steven says over come with doubt*

‘YOU CAN USE IT WE BELIEVE IN YOU. JUST DO IT’ Malachite ends up slamming Ruby to the ground, Ruby lets out a cry before poofing

Sapphire watches in disbelief and doubt, Sapphire overcome with anger allows the Ice to melt ontop of Malachite allow the full force of the ocean to slam her to the ground, Sapphire freezes Malachite and the area around her. Sapphire feeling the job is done rushes to Ruby’s gem letting her guard down for a moment Malachite uses the pressure of the ocean around the ice to break the ice allowing it to fall on top of Sapphire, Steven noticing this runs towards Sapphire and Ruby’s gem pulling out his shield but struggling to keep it up over the quickly rising water pressure.

‘Sa..sapphire I know Ruby poofed but we have bigger problems right now. Malachite is still able to use her powers and your ice is breaking. You’re losing control of your powers you have to keep a steady head’

‘I….I…I can’t…Steven..With Ruby poofed I don’t know how we’re going to beat Malachite now..I can’t believe I allowed us to defuse I saw this happening and I ignored it placing my trust in Ruby..’ Sapphire says with her face engulfed in tears*

‘Please Sapphire if we don’t do something now we’re both going to die along with Ruby’ Steven says while holding up his shield*

‘You’re right Steven, I’ll try.’ Sapphire rises to her feet before being thrown to the opposite side of the room by a water hand. Malachite’s laugh can be heard through the ice. Sapphire collides with the wall she too lets out a cry before poofing, Steven realizing the grave situation picks up Ruby’s gem while rushing towards Sapphire’s.

Steven reaches Sapphire’s gem while cupping both of the gems in his hands he says ‘Don’t worry Ruby & Sapphire it’s my turn to protect you.’ Steven places the two gems in his cheese burger backpack while using his bubble to try and allow it to float to the top of the ocean. Malachite realizes this and charges after Steven.

Meanwhile Pearl and Amethyst continue their search for Steven and Garnet in the sunken sea spire

‘Man this is taking forever Pearl…’

‘Quit whining..Wait..Do you feel that temperature change?’

‘Sorry I had to pee before we left..Not my fault…’ Amethyst says while giggling*

‘No not that and THAT’S DISGUSTING AMETHYST LEARN TO HOLD YOUR BLADDER, PLEASE FOR GOODNESS SAKES.’ Pearl says while focusing on the temperature change ‘It’s much more hotter than that, almost to the point of boiling..You don’t suppose it’s Ruby?’

‘WAIT!’ Amethyst says while noticing something in the distance*

‘IS THAT…’

Pearl interrupts Amethyst*

‘STEVEN?!’ ‘AND MALACHITE?!’

‘QUICKLY AMETHYST WE MUST HURRY’ Pearl says while hurrying towards the floating pink orb and Malachite circling it.

‘How are we gunna take her on? I don’t see Garnet anywhere..’ Amethyst says while rushing to help Steven while summoning her double whips

‘Maybe she…No..She can’t, she’s Garnet. Nothing makes her poof…nothing..’ Pearl says with doubt and grief

Steven notices the two approaching him he cries out ‘AMETHYST, PEARL, OVER HERE!’

The 2 rush towards Steven. The 2 grab Steven and start swimming away from Malachite

‘Where’s Garnet, Steven?!’ With a worrying tone to her voice

‘She unfused to try and beat Malachite and they both poofed..’ Steven says saddened reliving the moment

‘We have to get Malachite out of the water..’ ‘Amethyst use your whips to control Malachite’

‘Uhh don’t think that is gunna work..’

‘You got a better idea?’

‘Yeah why don’t we just lead her out of the water since she’s basically chasing after us?’

‘I….’ ‘Arghhh’ Pearl says annoyed at Amethyst ‘FINE, We’ll do it your way.’

‘Thanks, but I didn’t need your acceptance anyway I was going to do it regardless. HAHA!’

Amethyst speeds off with Steven to reach the shoreline

‘AMETHYST’ Pearl yells after Amethyst.

As Pearl races after Amethyst Malachite is trailing behind the 3 of them.

‘Right as planned huh Steven?’ ‘Ahhhhhhhhhmethyst youuuuuuuu’re go-o-o-o-o-o-oingggggggg tooooooo fast’

As Amethyst, Steven and Pearl reach the shore so does Malachite just as they reach the shore both Ruby and Sapphire start regenerating Steven realizes this and takes them both out of his cheese burger backpack and throws them on the sand they both regenerate furious and enraged Ruby and Sapphire fuse back together and attack Malachite with full force, Amethyst, Pearl and Steven stand there shocked.

‘DON’T YOU EVER TOUCH MY FRIENDS EVER AGAIN.’ Garnet delivers a final blow and knocks Malachite out cold. The 2 unfuse and both Lapis and Jasper are trapped in bubbles until The crystal gems find a way to send Jasper back to homeworld without her returning.

‘Man that was rough don’t you guys think?’ Amethyst says

‘You barely did anything Amethyst.’ Says Pearl

‘Not like you did anything either Pearl.’

‘HEY I HELPED’

‘Oh yeah with what?’

‘…’ The 2 stop arguing and return back to their daily tasks.

Garnet and Steven hang back.

‘Hey Steven, I’m glad that you wanted to try and protect us, we’re sorry for unfusing and potentially costing your life. We can’t begin to express how undeniably sorry we are..’

‘That’s fine Garnet! I wanted to make sure you two were protected but I wasn’t able to do the best! I’m sure I’ll be stronger the next time we go on a life threatening mission!’ Steven says while cracking a smile.

‘We love you, Steven.’

‘I love you too, Garnet.’
