I'm stoked.
I am relatively new to the craft beer world. I turned 21 this June and although this obviously doesn't mean I started drinking craft just in June it does mean I've only recently been able to access the full wonderful world of beer. This said, I've been struggling a little bit honing my sense to be able to pick up tastes in beer. For the most part my abilities have been limited to observations like "I taste citrus" or "This is very sweet." I recently began reading "Tasting Beer: An Insiders Guide to the World's Greatest Drink" by Randy Mosher. and I can't recommend it enough for someone new to the community. This brings me to why I am stoked. To help my "beer sense" I have been tasting beers and then looking at multiple sites to compare my analysis to those who are more experienced and my results have been discouraging... until tonight. I was out at a taproom with a friend and happened across Clown Shoes' Blaecorn Unidragon(which is delicious) and for the first time ever my personal experience with the beer matched up to the pros, finding dark chocolate cocoa and licorice with some piny hops. Anyways, the point of my post is partially selfish( to brag a little) and also to urge newer beer drinkers to 1. read this book and 2. not get discouraged by feeling inexperienced because eventually there'll be an aha moment that makes it all worth it(not to say delicious beer isn't worth it in itself). cheers y'all
