Getting back into Destiny

I played the game for maybe 10 hours when it came out but it never really clicked with me. Seeing all this hype with the taken king i was thinking of getting back into it again once i finish MGSV. But i'm guessing a lot has changed in a year so i'm not sure how to start again. Should i just pick up my level 16(ish) Titan on venus or delete him and start over from scratch again? Also do i need to buy all the DLC's at once, should i even care about the others beside taken king or just buy taken king once i finish the vanilla story missions?
