Any experience with "Meals on Wheels" type assistance for companion animals?
Sorry to intrude if this isn't the right sub to ask this question.
I do medical fostering (cats) for our local shelter and one local rescue. Both are seeing an increase in financial surrenders - people who can't afford their pets. It's not expensive medical care, just folks who can't afford the basics (like pet food, kitty litter). Over the past 5 months, there's been a 13% uptick in financial surrenders. So, some of the supporters are considering a pilot "meals on wheels" type program to try to keep some of these animals with their families. Volunteers (presumably) would deliver some very basic pet supplies regularly to families who qualify.
Has anyone had any experience they can share? I'm looking for info like budget numbers, percentage decrease/increase in surrenders, how you went about qualifying recipients. If your association tried it and ultimately gave it up, it would be interesting to know why the program closed.
Thanks in advance for any responses! You shelter workers are a really precious resource for your communities.
