Life is good for Dexter. His relationship with Rita is going really well and he's thrilled when Cody asks him if he would come to his school on Dad's day. He's also disposing of certain individuals according to his father Harry's code of conduct. He chooses his next victim, a drug dealer known as Freebo but on the night in question finds that a stranger is in the house. Dexter is attacked and kills the man who turns out to be Oscar Prado, the younger brother of a highly respected Assistant District Attorney Miguel Prado. Dexter can't quite figure out what Oscar was doing in the house and is bothered by the fact that he has killed someone outside of Harry's code. Dexter's sister Debra is put in charge of the Prado case by newly promoted Sgt. Angel Batista but her big mouth gets her into trouble. She is also approached by an officer from Internal Affairs who have an interest in a new squad member, Joey Quinn, but she refuses to cooperate.

One of the best directors between S2-S4, paired with the showrunner. May have been a better combination to use for something other than the premiere for S3, as it's more focused on establishing the current story than excitement.

TidbitsObservations
"Where are you?" That line from Rita in this episode is a line she says in S01E08, the first time she and Dexter have sex.I had an interesting conversation on this sub about the grain disappearing from the show after S2, and now watching on the BR rips, I can confirm that this isn't the case so far. The grain is still very much a part of the cinematography.
RatingStatement
8Dexter killing an innocent person, well; kind of innocent, is extremely interesting. Seeing the effects it has on Dexter as he scrambles to make sense of what he has done is powerful. Dexter also learns he's going to be a dad, after being a great dad earlier in the episode. I love the beginning of the episode too, reintroducing us nicely to the stable world of Dexter, where everything is going well and Dexter's in the dentist office. And mmm, donuts. Solid episode.
