Subtank rba and high VG

I just bought an 80% vg liquid yesterday, it could be my ADV, but that high vg is making me nuts. I tried pancake wicking method and still got dry hit when I chain vape. Am I doing it wrong? Does the cotton have to be thick or not? I cut the cotton short, around 3mm, and try not to cover the juice hole (I'm sorry I forgot the word for it). I think I do all the riptrippers tutorial, but I still got dry hits.
