[VA] Bait and Switch IT/Software Contracting company

Hello

I am currently working for a company based out of Virginia.

I was hired directly out of college on the promise that I will receive training and career guidance such as resume building and interview skill training. I signed a Training agreement that stated that I will work for the company for 24 months or else pay a large fee (tens of thousands) so that this company can recover the costs invested in me during training.

For a majority of the training, our training group sat in a room without a trainer and were told to follow free online tutorials.

The career guidance consisted of the "marketing team" and trainers telling us to put fake companies and fake projects on our resumes so that they can market us as professionals with more experience than we actually have. I have looked back and all of this was done face to face, there is no written record of this, just people willing to corroborate the story.

After we have been marketed and placed with a client we are given a $500 relocation assistance. My client was on the other side of the country, so I took on debt to move to where I am now.

After a year at this client my contract has ended and I am expected to move back to Virginia and then out to wherever the next client is on another $500. I do not have the financial means to do this. And I don't want to be misrepresented by their marketing team again. I contacted them to quit, but they are holding the penalty of the training agreement over my head.

What legal recourse if any do I have to get out of this? I understand that it may be hard to determine this without the actual contract. So at the very best, what should my next step be?

EDIT: The reason I went along with this the first time is that I am not originally from Virginia. If I didn't go along with it I would have been unemployed, hundreds of miles from home.
