What do you need for a beginner's recording setup?

Hi guys,

I'm looking at purchasing some equipment this weekend to set up a small studio in my rumpus room and was wondering which equipment I should be purchasing and also what they do. I'm aware I need a mic (obviously) and a condenser but is there anything else? A computer? Any cables? Egg cartons on the walls? I truly have no clue where to start. Any good resources I should check out? Brands to avoid? I'm a beginner so any and all help and tips would be much appreciated. For the record I don't mean a recording setup befit a beginner singer, I mean a starter kit for a studio.

I have some basic experience and knowledge of software such as audacity and FL studio and I pick up software very easily. Am I using the correct software for this task or should I consider alternatives? If so, which ones?

Is there a subreddit focusing on this subject? Even a forum or Facebook page would be fine. Where can I go to read about and discuss this?

Thank you for any assistance you can provide.
