CMV: I don't think there's significant evidence against religion being generally detrimental to modern society. Change my view, please!
Hiya, haven't done a CMV in a while.
I tried to carefully word this to make it clear that I am not claiming that I have surefire support for the claim that religion IS detrimental to society. As far as my education has brought me, I've not been able to fulfill my end on the burden of proof.
However, I'd like to know if there's evidence against such a claim for me to peruse, some abstracts to read up on. It seems just based on what I've seen, Christian politicians having an edge, churches being tax-free, acts of terror in the name of religion, things of the sort, it seems like religion has a rather bad effect on the quality of life. I understand the individual benefits, I think a shaky source once told me that faith can increase your lifespan up to 2 years or so, but I'm really trying to grasp the big picture as best I can.
If you have evidence FOR my claim, some meta analysis of religion or something, that would be absolutely lovely as well. Really anything regarding religion's effect on society today would expand my mind.
If you'd like to know more about why I'm leaning towards this point of view so you can change my view on that, feel free to ask a bunch of random questions until you learn something. I feel like I described it as best as I can on my own above in that one sentence. Thanks!
Hello, users of CMV! This is a footnote from your moderators. We'd just like to remind you of a couple of things. Firstly, please remember to read through our rules. If you see a comment that has broken one, it is more effective to report it than downvote it. Speaking of which, downvotes don't change views**! If you are thinking about submitting a CMV yourself, please have a look through our popular topics wiki first. Any questions or concerns? Feel free to message us. Happy CMVing!
