Went dancing to tackle sexuality issues, turned into overwhelming sexuality AND social anxiety...
A little background: I am bisexual (only my best friends and boyfriend know) but have little to no experience acting on it. I have always had a very strongly defined "personal space bubble" even when I was single and [thought I was] straight; this is mainly a complicated byproduct of natural shyness plus conservative upbringing plus emotionally abusive mother, and I have always felt very limited by the conflict between my desires and my unshakable, exaggerated "comfort zone". I have recently felt very aware of my sexual repression, and decided to try to tackle it by going out dancing in the hopes of dancing with some nice gay/bisexual ladies (given the green light by my very understanding boyfriend who wants me to both experience things I never allowed myself to, plus work through this stuff). No guys though, I don't really like dancing with guys because I always get the sense that they are hoping for a little extra, plus I am just more curious about girls than guys right now for whatever reason.
However, I went out to TuezGayz (a gay night at the Austin bar Barbarellas) with a good friend of mine, but it eventually devolved into an alternation between social anxiety talking to guys hitting on us (wtf it's gays night...) and sexual/social anxiety dancing. Every time we took a break from dancing to talk outside, guy would hit on us, so it was like there was no relief. At first it felt like good practice for me to talk to new people, but quickly I became overwhelmed by all the dancing and hyper-awareness of my personal bubble despite wanting to dance with people and talking to people I didn't want to talk to. PLUS dancing itself makes me feel really self-conscious. It was like three anxiety issues all in one. Though going out this time was a good starting point, it was still horribly frustrating and overwhelming. I had a few drinks and was quite tipsy, but STILL the anxiety won out... Seriously anxiety, seriously??
This is mostly a rant but I also would like to know if anyone has any similar experiences? How do I relax and dance with people when I keep being hyper-aware of anyone approaching me? Should I just get really drunk next time and dial it back every time after that until I don't need alcohol as my crutch? Should my friend and I dress really [stereotypically] lesbian so that guys leave us alone? Is there a better time of week to go? How else can I separate the many ways my anxiety manifests itself, and deal with just ONE at a time, not three...? Can anyone sympathize with this??
