"Realistic" anime, like Tokyo Godfathers?

Request

Tokyo Godfathers has always hit me as the kind of movie that, if it had been produced in Hollywood as live action, would have won a lot of awards. I don't have anything at all against fantasy/sci-fi, but I was thinking that it was rare to find an anime so whimsical and stylish while also being very grounded in reality (minus its surrealism). I can't think of another anime I've seen that has been a straight up drama dealing with real issues, like poverty, alcoholism, and AIDs, in addition to being just really good. In fact, every anime that I can think of right now that doesn't have aspects of fantasy/sci-fi are school romance animes, which I'm also not super interested in. Even Summer Wars, which I love, occurs within a sort of idealistic, anime-tropey world.

Can you guys think of any other good anime series's or films that fall into the same sort of western drama-esque genre as Tokyo Godfathers?

Edit: I guess Death Parade would KIND OF fit into this genre, since it deals with a lot of real life issues. It still strays from realism though.
