[Metal Overtüre][Resolution] Player only rolls
Metal Overtüre is a game where music is supreme over all other things. Its heavily influenced by British heavy metal so there are strong underlying themes of economical class segregation and despair. Its kinda like if Metalocalpse had a love child with Brütal Legends and then that kid married Mad Max.
Design Goals
I was using the Wushu System mechanics which are very freeflow and allow for some amazing descriptions but playtesting showed that it was lacking some structure in certain places. So I'm after creating something that allows for the METAL descriptions but with a bit of structure.
One thing people did seem to care for is the fact that the players do all the rolling. I think this is the main reason for the success of the cypher system (Numenera, The Strange).
Mechanic Description
The game is skill based and skills are made up of a pool of dice, at a certain level which defines the number to roll under & equal too. For example Guitarist - 2 dice @ level 4 means you roll 2 dice and any that are equal to 4 or below are a success. This is a d10 pool system.
Task resolution is as followed.
- Player describes their action "I power slide towards them shredding electric lightening solo's and then upper cut him with my guitar"
- GM retort "The drummer is shocked by the metal onslaught but she manages to bring her drum sticks down in a X in order to block your attack"
- Resolution
For resolution I was thinking that mooks have a rating for attack and defence (probably called something like brutal & blood). It is then up to the players to split their dice pool into defence and attack. If they roll more attack than the mooks defence then they successfully win the resolution. If they don't and they don't roll enough defence the mook wins. Any other thing is a stalemate.
- Resolution description. Whoever won the roll describes what happens.
What are peoples thoughts? I will answer any questions posted if people need more information.
