High School

I forgot my book so I had to leave class to get it.
I got demerits.
The halls were empty and my shoes echoed above
the muffled sounds coming through the closed doors.
I walked past the office and went to my locker.
As I spun the combination all I could hear
was the buzzing of the lights when the clock above me ticked off a minute
with a metallic clunk.
I froze and listened to it tick off another one.
I was still standing there when the principal walked
by and asked if I knew where I was supposed to be.
"Does anyone?", I replied.
He took me to his office and explained respect.
I got demerits.
He sent me back to class and when I arrived
the teacher asked where my book was
and I looked at my hands and they were empty.
