Bob was standing there, looking at me with his worried expression once again. His skin was much less whiter than before. Also his eyes were somewhat less darker.
“Where the fuck have you been ?” I snapped at him. Not something I am proud of but I’ve been through a lot these past few weeks so I understandably was on the edge most of the time.
“I see you’re angry at me. I understand, but now I am here to answer all your questions” Bob said as he aproached my bed. He grabed my hand and once again I was forced to close my eyes. I opened them shortly after to find myself on a open field. It was dawn and at the far end of the field there was a small forest. Bob was standing next to me. I looked at him and asked “Again with this. Why are we here?” “We are waiting for your ancestor to show up. I was here 100 years ago to answer his questions and now I will show the truth to you “he answered calmly, while not looking away from the forest at the far end. “I am sick of waiting !” I yelled at him and pushed him away, “TALK NOW ” I demanded. As I pushed Bob away I felt as if something was tightening around my throat. As if arms were around it. Something was choking me.
“Don’t attack me. AGAIN !!! ” Bob said as he stood up. “I may be here to help you but I have my limits.”. The grip around my throat loosened and I was able to breathe again. “I am sorry but you provoke me” , Bob said as he extend his arm to help me get up.
”Don’t touch me” , I pushed it away and turned my gaze towards the forest. Not long after that a man apeared from it. “C’mon, let’s go” , Bob said and started walking towards the man. I followed shortly after. We aproached it and I was able to recognize my great-grandfather ( I’ll call him Igor for the rest of the story).
“I am here. Thanks for the help” , Igor said to Bob and they shook hands.
“As promised. Now follow me. We need to talk” , Bob said and they started walking slowly. I closely followed.
“Now tell me about that boy you spoke off in the cave and why is it after me? ” , Igor said to Bob while looking around to make sure he wasn’t followed.
“My family was powerful, my friend. I come from a line of witches, known today as Vedmak.” , Bob began talking.
Here is where I should explain. In the Slavic mythology Vedmak was a warlock or a male witch.Vedmaks were magic being that were helping people, getting rid of sicknesses, stoping evil witches from doing magic that would potentially lead to harm towards people or animals. They could also shapeshift into any animal or object. But many of them weren’t here to do good to people. Some of them managed to get into contact with the evil spirits and through them they gained powers. People say that some Vedmaks were even serving the Devil himself.
“My mother was a powerful Vedma (the female equivalent of Vedmak) but she wasn’t one of the good ones. She was very evil woman. My father was not a Vedmak but he was rich and powerful. You met him before.” , Bob said to Igor who was somewhat taken away by this.
“Met him ?” , Igor was puzzled.
“Your uncle” , Bob calmly answered and looked him in the eyes.
You can imagine the shock on Igor’s and mine faces when we heard this.
“What ?” , we both said but obviously I wasn’t supposed to be there so no one paid attention to me.
“Yes, we are related by blood. You see my mother was obssesed with creating ‘the perfect servent’ that would help complete her work. She talked to her ‘Father’ which is what she called the demon she was commanded by. He gave her the instructions and she followed, she made a lot of sacrifices to him, many childrens were brought in that damn basement, but no one ever left it. She took away their eyes so they couldn’t see what she was doing to them. Awful, dark magic that would revive them but completely new, without a single note of happines, of love, of humanity inside them. The perfect little servent that would help her achieve her goal. My father tried to stop her but he was no match to her. He was easily overpowered by the powerful Vedma and was placed under her full control. She made him crazy so he could one day take the blame for her actions and her work could continue a new somewhere else.” , Bob said but this time he was looking at me instead of my great-grandfather.
“Dear God.” Igor couldn't believe what he was hearing … “So Sonya (the name of the headless woman I presume) was behind our family’s massacre.” Igor said to Bob who shook his head in agreement ”Yes, your uncle gone mad and the mutilated bodies of children in the besement plus the names of your family written on the walls of the basement were enough to convince them that our family was mad. All of them. They did not want to take any chances so they had them all killed.”
“But not my father, why ?” , Igor asked
“Because he was the one that broke the magic barrier around the cottage. You see when there is an evil Vedmak, a good one shall appear to help which happened to be your father. My mother placed a dark spell around the cottage that would make anyone in the area die in a matter of minutes " Bob said as he took the hand of my great-grandfather. “Come, you need to see something”. Igor closed his eyes and before they disapeared Bob looked at me and said . “Go now, I’ll be here with you soon”. I closed my eyes again and after a few seconds I woke up in my hospital bed.
For the next few days I waited for Bob to show up as he promised but he did not. In the meantime I managed to patch the things up with my mother, I apologised for my behaviour the other day and she told me that my grandmother and father are missing and that she went to the police to file in a missing person report on both.
After a few days of testing and probing the doctors found nothing wrong with me so they released me and I finally was able to come home. I felt very relieved coming back here. It made me feel safe, despite the fact that I wasn’t. I walked around the house to make sure that no one was there. I was worried about my father, his number disconnected, and God knows where. “Hugo obviously know where he is but that does not help at all. What if he is dead ? Oh God, please, no" my thoughts were racing. “Where the hell are you, you little monster” I thought about Bob for a second.
And just as that thought crossed my mind, he appeared. He was standing at the far end of the hallway, next to the bedroom, waving at me.
“Come here” he said and walked in the bedroom. I followed him.
‘OK. I am here, you are here, speak” I demanded from him. “You can start with what exactly are you ?” .
“I am a servent and I am here to serve the monster that my mother created.” Bob said to me as he sat in the middle of the room. “My brother was the original one, ‘the perfect servent’. My mother turned him when she realised that all those kids were useless. She had to use something stronger, something she hold dear to her. She always favoured him over me. I was small, sickly and not of much use. I was constantly reminded of that whenever she spoke to me. She realised that blood is stronger than any magic and once she completed her ritual, Hugo woke up. But he wasn’t Hugo anymore. Before the ritual, my brother was not much different than any normal kid.He was a happy child, he had friends and I was close to my brother back then. We were together in everything. He would always be there for me, whenever I needed him the most, he would come and save me. That kid that punched me once, that lady that made fun of my walk. He would take care of it. But once she turned him he was different. He wasn’t the Hugo I remembered. He was now totally hers with only suffering to others on his mind.” Bob said as tears started falling from his little black eyes.
If before this I was angry at that kid, I was now sympathetic. If something, I could relate to him with me and my brother. We were so close back in the days, thanks to the limited number of people we had in our lifes for … reasons. Everything changed when his addiction began. It started small, a pill a day, then two, then three, then different drugs. I started suspecting something when his attitude towards me, towards our parents, towards his girlfriend (now wife) changed. He wasn’t the same and I could feel it. I was convinced when I saw him talking to a ‘friend of his’ once in a backalley. I confronted him and he tried to convince me that he was trying to stop but he really wasn’t because a few days later I caught him doing cocaine in our bathroom. I confronted my parents about it, despite his protests and they were furios. “I will not allow another fingers from anybody to be pointed at my family and be judged upon” my father would say back then. He made him move out of town and settle him into the town next to ours, to live with my grandparents (my mother’s parents) who moved out shortly after my mother married my father. It proved to be a good decision because a few months later his girlfriend left town to go live with him and after a few years they got married. He called my parents to announce his intentions to them and to apologise for the troubles he brought them. I got to hear him for the first time in some years and I felt very good about it but nothing was the same between us again. I could feel it in his voice. We had drifted apart from each other and perhaps it was my fault.
“I loved my brother and I couldn’t live with myself to see him like that. So I made my mother to turn me as well. If I could reach out to him in that way since I couldn’t do it in any other, then so be it, ” Bob continued his story. “She laughed at first but then she got the excellent idea, to make me his servent.I was created to help him in his ‘work’. And this is what I am today. I am here to serve my older, evil brother. For years I followed him. Wherever he went, I went with him. He despised me, he saw me as ‘unfit’ and used every oportunity that presented itself to hurt me. But I was convinced that he would snap back and would turn away from the evil that had filled his heart. But I grew disillusioned when he completed the ritual he was made for.
He let the demon my mother had conversed with posses him. But the demon couldn’t take full control of him since Hugo was created by blood magic. Once the last member of his original family dies, the demon could be freed. The only one left was your great-grandfather and his kids.” Bob said as he looked at me.
“You see now why I had to talk to Igor back then. He had to do something before Hugo got to them first and killed them”
“But, in the cave you talked to my great-grandfather about a ‘perfect host’. What is that ?” I asked Bob who now was looking outside the window.
“He needs another host. Hugo is just a temporal vessel. Once Hugo’s bloodline ends, the demon could be released upon the world but in a different host. The perfect host.” Bob answered me without looking at me.
“And who is that perfect host” I kept pushing. “Well I thought that it would be you. But Hugo found someone else” Bob said as he stood up and looked at me.
“Who ?” I asked but deep down I knew the answer already. Bob just walked to my mother’s nighstand and took a picture from the top of it. He handed to me and when I saw it my fears were confirmed. It was a picture of my niece, with the face of my brother scratched out.
