"Hi everybody! I'm Joey Montoya, founder of Urban Native Era clothing company. AMAA!"

Hey r/IndianCountry! I am Joey Montoya, a Lipan Apache from Texas, but was born and raised in San Francisco, CA. I started my own company called Urban Native Era which focuses on reclaiming who we are as Indigenous people of the 21st century by showing and bringing awareness not only on our culture, but issues that our Indigenous people are still facing today. I attend San Jose State University where I founded N.A.S.O. (Native American Student Organization). Throughout my time at SJSU I was able to discover my passion for art and am studying graphic design and advertising.

Here is proof that this is me: http://imgur.com/Pfso3Xv

Hey Joey! Love your clothing line. I have a question for you:

How's life been different since founding Urban Native Era? What message do you hope to spread with it?

Thanks!

Hi Ladyeesti, Thank you! Its been a little different in the sense of having to balance Urban Native Era life with school and work. I want to focus on Urban Native Era all day, but sometimes it is hard to keep up with it.

I hope to spread many messages, but specifically its sharing with the world who we are as Indigenous People and hopefully changing the way people view us in the 21st century. I also want to share the message to our youth that you should do what you love and that you can do it.

Thanks for the questions!

Hey Joey,

Never heard of your stuff before now and I love the designs! I'm in Chicago and there are very few opportunities here for me to show my Native cultural pride. So I'm definitely going to be grabbing a few things.

Great work!

Do you check out the Mitchell Museum in Evanston? I've heard mixed reviews of the Trickster Gallery in Schaumberg.

1
MixingDrinks•

Not yet! I've been wanting to go. Is it good? I haven't even heard of that one in Schaumburg. I don't get out of downtown a lot.

Ever since American Indian Art Gallery closed its doors in 1999, the Bay Area Native art scene seems like it has struggled for venues, visibility, and cohesion. What is does the current San Francisco Native art scene look like? Where are people showing?

Good question! A nice one is the Mission Multicultural Center! But you are right, it has been struggling but as we come to this new age and era of technology we will start to see it coming back. We hope for it to come back and hopefully in the near future we can help start that! ohhh! I also know they did a photography series with some of our Ohlone Relatives at the SF main Library downtown! But will definitely keep an eye out for this. Thanks for this question!

Are Richard Castaneda and the Indigenous Arts Coalition still doing shows?

joeymontoyaOPLipan Apache•

I am not too sure if they are.

Thanks for joining us, Joey! What inspired you to start Urban Native Era? What other projects are you working on these days or plan on getting started soon? Thanks a bunch.

Before the end of 2012 I know I wanted to do something for our community and spreading the awareness about who we are to the common folks. What inspired me to to create Urban Native Era was the Idle No More movement. I started to travel up and down California taking photos of the Rally's and protests and I need a place to put them. So before the Idle No More movement I was reading a book about Urban Natives and It stuck to me. Thats who I am.After the movement Idle No More was launched, I thought about how a new Era was being brought to the scene.

Working on a photo/video series project on war veterans, people who were relocated, and more. Hopefully releasing a kickstarter for the project in the new year. Also many collaboration with different clothing brands in the near future! We also plan on working with more indigenous artists in music and art! Thanks for the question!

Thanks for joining us, Joey!

Do you ever have to deal preconceived ideas about with what Native American art and designs 'should' be?

If you could differentiate between your approach when it comes from Natives and non-Natives, I'd appreciate it.

(An easy question, but I'm curious about your take on it.)

5
joeymontoyaOPLipan Apache•

Definitely. Our logo which is called the Diverse Culture logo has a more pacific northwest style but also has artwork styles from all over Native America. When people see that they are like wow thats different. I think what they preconceived ideas of who we are is feathers, headdress, and buck skin. But I never really deal with someone saying this should be like this or that. Native people always ask about the style I use as well, but more non natives are searching for a specific meaning towards the design. I always give them my meaning, but I sometimes see them looking for a more sacred meaning. Thanks for the questions!

What are some other native-owned clothing companies you would recommend checking out?

4
joeymontoyaOPLipan Apache•

ahhh! Yes! thentvs.com @ntvsclothing oxdxclothing.com @oxdxclothing

Those are my favorite native owned clothing companies! Definitely check them out!

joeymontoyaOPLipan Apache•

There are more brands! Just cant think off the top of my head, but we hope to collab with some of them in the near future.

Check out my brothers brand and artwork though. He does dope stuff as well. www.Ikoshy.com

1
ladyeestiMescalero•

Love Ikoshy as well! Is it just a coincidence that you and our brother both have clothing companies or did you plan it?

3
joeymontoyaOPLipan Apache•

He has been doing art for way longer then I have, but we didn't really plan it out. It kinda of just happened. I will give him props because he started his business way before me! thanks for the question!

hi joey, thanks for doing this! i'm wondering, other than supporting your store, how can a non Native help empower your community? sometimes I feel that my "clicktivism" is irrelevant.

4
joeymontoyaOPLipan Apache•

Hi! Honestly it is coming to events in the community, showing your face, and meeting everyone. We need people like you to help us and show face. Without our non native families Urban Native Era would not be where we are today! Social media has a huge part in it also, so just keeping up with what we are doing through there and inviting your friends to check out our page and other pages like ours is doing a huge amount of work and helping us and the community. Thank you so much!

ladyeestiMescalero•

I've seen that you're a contributor on the website Natives in America, can you tell us what it's like writing for them and your general experience with the site?

4
joeymontoyaOPLipan Apache•

YES! Megan Red-Shirt Shaw ( Founder of Natives In America), is an amazing person! When she told me about it before it was released and I told her I was all in. Its been amazing sharing our stories through writing. Being able to share our feelings is hard sometimes so this is a perfect way of sharing our thoughts about issues and giving us a VOICE. Its awesome!

The site is dope! and some new stuff is on the way!

u/LenoX8 asked:

Hello, thank you for doing this So are you a long term planning and play it safe kind of person or move fast and break things kind of?

3
LenoX8•

I would say move fast and break things kind of person

2
joeymontoyaOPLipan Apache•

Lol. Long term

2
OpechanPamunkey•

u/imthatguy25 asked:

what do you think is the most special part of your company?

3
joeymontoyaOPLipan Apache•

I think being different than any other clothing brand. We have a meaning behind what we do and how we were created. I know there are some brands like that but in Urban settings we see people coming out with brands or a company but just doing it for the money. We do it for the awareness and correct representation of who we are and spreading awareness about issues in our communities.

Love what you're doing Joey! Cant wait to read this AMA later -Pbro

Thanks dude!

Can you restock those pocket tees but with regular v-necks?

Keep up the good work!

3
joeymontoyaOPLipan Apache•

yes! We will be working on restocking on all our pocket t's. Thank you!

2
titty-sprnkles•

How do you feel about whites/non natives wearing your clothing? I am a white male who has a deep respect for the indigenous cultures of America. I hate seeing brands that exploit Native American artwork and traditions and don't give any of the contributions to the rite full owners.

2
joeymontoyaOPLipan Apache•

I think its awesome! And im really supportive of non natives who understand our culture. Thanks a lot! And ya we definitely hate seeing brands appropriate our culture. Sorry for the late reply. Long day! aha. Thanks again for the question! We appreciate your support!
