Motivational Monday - Don’t set yourself on fire to keep other people warm

“Don’t set yourself on fire to keep other people warm”, it’s one of the first pieces of advice I’ve read on Reddit, quite some time ago.

It wasn’t aimed towards me, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized just how important it is. For both ourselves and the people we care about, this piece of advice is golden. If you can’t take care of yourself, how are you supposed to be able to take care of others?

This is especially important to realize if you’ve already done some stuff for others. It happens more than often that someone slowly feels like he/she should help out again, but that’s not nearly always the case.

Of course, helping out the people close to us is very important. Friendship and family connections are very important, and we should take care of each other when we can.

But we shouldn’t forget that we, ourselves, also carry weight, and shouldn’t carry too much for others. It's a sign of maturity, not selfishness.
