Ashes
The moment I leave is
the moment you come back
But you're unaware of what is lost,
what's been flushed away with the past
what's been painted by taint
and colored by black
and the fact that you're not coming back at all
because there's nothing to return to
you're trying to defibrillate a body cold as stone
stiff as charred wood, that snaps in your hands
leaving them dark and staining them that hideous, frigid color
a cigarette left to burn out, and now you reach for a drag
burning only filter and coughing up the taste
throwing a log into a pile of ashes, hoping it to catch
hoping it to rekindle a long, long lost flame
