When I Was Younger And You Were Not
#When I Was Younger And You Were Not
When I was younger and you were not
You taught me how to catch snowflakes on my tongue
Caught up in our own twin bleak landscapes
We walked for days, together
Me, bundled in my mittens and wellies
And you dressed for some sort of luau
Until
One finally landed
And with perfect melodic heartbeat synchonicity
It exploded on my frozen lips
Thousands of flourescent cascades
Shimmering shiver-sizzles
And was gone…
Fools, in their madness
Know that the sunrise is only an illusion
(When I was younger and you were not)
Just a smattering of dust against the windshield
"There are no true new beginnings!" they exclaim,
Eyes glazed in their wisdom
But false or not,
It takes my breath anyway.
So I would rather be
Naively conned than a jaded connosieur
So what?
(When I was younger and you were not)
Every time it snows
I walk for days, alone
And when I try to remember
The way you used to look at me
And find I no longer can
It's okay.
It's becoming okay.
The sun is in my eyes
And the taste of freshly fallen kisses
Still lingers on my tongue
Feet ache now from walking
But they remember a time
When I was younger and you were not
