Lately

Lately, I’ve been wondering
Is it worth it?
No, don’t get me twisted;
I’m not contemplating death.
I’m contemplating whether or not
my work is futile, whether or not
my stress is in vain, whether or not
my efforts are needless, whether or not
people talk about me behind their backs,
snickering as their quick glance fires
sharp bullets into the juts of my spine,
whether this whole existence is a devious
charade. The person I think I am is not the
person they see me as.
And as the storm of my adolescence weathers
my ego to something small, I wonder
whether or not a few big bucks in the distant future
are worth the trouble.
I wonder whether or not
the nausea from
life is something
or a dissonant
note
from a broken instrument,
another deceptive sound
in the cacophony of my life.
