how constellations feel
you named me like a constellation,
after what i reminded you of in the dark.
but what of evening?
who am i then, before trees draw enough shadow to fool the streetlights? am i even there?
in the morning am i some new ghost,
still in his pajamas, who can’t turn off
his bedroom lamp?
you showed me that dawn and dusk are ways of leaving.
i can watch all the little headlights flip
on or off to oppose it,
but no one stays for long.
i don’t know where daylight leaves me,
with everything where yesterday left it.
in the creeping light, i’m still your stiff figure of stars
until i can no longer hold the pose.
when you go is when i forget.
i forget
where i was
before the sun set.
