I just realized something

When we signed Tebow, that is when we had the spotlight on us. That was where the expectations and hype originated. I remember the media was kinda 'so-so' about the offseason like they should've been, and were preaching about our aquisitions needing time in this system. Tebow-mania flushed that and we became Super Bowl favorites prematurely. All of our problems currently revolve around injury and lack of preperation, basically it is nothing we can flip a switch to fix.

I think we were duped by the media into thinking this team was ready. Fool us once, shame on them. Fool us twice, shame on us. This isn't the first time, guys. We should be ashamed. Philly should definitely know better than to roll with the hype. This was going to happen, regardless. Did you guys seriously think a team with such a lite WR corps could get through the playoffs? Hell, even Seattle had more than us at WR but look at the rest of their team... we don't have a facet like they [had] to put the team on their back consistently. Our defense looked great at first but injuries knocked us down & out.

That's how I see the current situation.

TL;DR fuck Tebow and fuck Philadelphia sports media. Most of all, fuck ourselves though, for being fooled again.

Am I the only one who doesn't really regret the hype? Summer was a great time as an Eagles fan. It was so much fun to read about camp each day and learn about what was going on with the team. Right now sucks, but it would suck whether there was preseason hype or not. A good time was had by all this preseason and as it turned out, it was the only good time we could have this year, so fuck it.

This was an absolutely fabulous offseason and preseason to be an Eagles fan...I mean, with Josh Huff coming here and always sharing with us reasons why he'd breakout this year, Bradford throwing homing misses left and right, JaCorey Shephard intercepting like a baws, and the only things our receivers were dropping were Chip Kelly's shoes. Our biggest worry was that Tebow would need to take the field at some point, but so long as it was in the playoffs, we knew he'd bring his best 3:16 magic. We absolutely killed it at Hype Bowl 2015.

We were fucking 2015 NFL Preseason Champs. I don't give a fuck what anyone says, that was an amazing feeling. We won the PreSuper Bowl and no one can take those memories from us.

Yeah I agree, I was a fun time.

OP is basically saying "WTF is wrong with you guys, we should have been miserable, sad, negative people all off-season."

If it hadn't happened we would probably be having an overall better time the entire RS and offseason this year though... I mean i'm all for condensing the fun into one moment but if we're gonna do that it better be the super bowl.

I disagree because as much as people want to make this a rebuilding year, you don't fucking trade away a second round pick and sign high priced FA to rebuild. Do A)Chip Kelly doesn't know how to properly build a NFL team (through the draft) or B) this was a failed attempt by Chip yo make the next step and not a rebuilding year.

Who fires a GM after a couple years? Chip is thinking longer term than any of us, buster.

Tebow had nothing to do with it. The media got on their case at the end of the season when Tom Gamble was released.

11
deadendpathOP"I'm all about expanding my Chips" - Big L•

Yeah he did... i mean the cameras and reporters were only there for him. Eagles were gonna fly pretty low all offseason and preseason if not for that signing. It definitely made us the team to watch all summer which only disappointed everyone further. We tricked the world into thinking we weren't going to have a shitty year after an overhaul. Without Tebow I think the media was more level-headed. When we released Tebow it made people want to see us fail, as well.

calmdc•

The preseason started with an open power struggle between Chip and Howie and went downhill from there.

Lesean McCoy was traded in early March. Nick Foles was traded for Bradford a week later. Byron Maxwell was signed around the same time as the Foles trade. Murray was signed a couple of days after Maxwell.

Tebow was signed in late April.

The Eagles had a # ton of media coverage before Tebow was picked up. It was also very opinionated. Adding Tebow didn't help, but it definitely didn't start anything that wasn't already in progress, and it's become a nonfactor after he was released.

digitizemd•

This is either great trolling or an amazing case of being delusional. The spot light happened because of the (for the nfl) insane trades orchestrated by Chip and other offseason additions:

-McCoy for Alonso

-Foles for Bradford

-Signing Murray and Mathews (and Gore)

People who would die for Tebow paid more attention, but their a fringe demographic.

1
deadendpathOP"I'm all about expanding my Chips" - Big L•

The cameras showed up for Tebow and didn't want to leave with empty hands so they fabricated hype and systematically dragged our team down week by week.

Tebow came in and played better and at the worst equal to Barkley. I liked the purpose of that move to be honest, get rid of them both at that point. Evaluation through competition.

It's preseason hype, gets people all the time. Bradford throws 10/10 looking like Tom Fucking Brady in his first PREseason game, everything luckily clicks for half a game and we think we are golden.

5
MikeTysonChickenChipBot Squad•

I liked bringing in another QB to push Barkley, you have to do that. I didn't like that it was Tebow they brought it. It was such a low upside move for the organization. Tebow did look better than Barkley but what does that really say? Not much in my opinion.

1
mister_pringle•

No, he didn't. What games were you watching?

-1
nabbersauce•

Dude that last preseason game Tebow was throwing fucking lasers. I agree he sucked up until that point but that last game he looked good

1
sixtysixty•

The Eagles were a trendy Super Bowl pick by the national media before the whole Tebow nonsense. The spotlight was on the Eagles because Chip Kelly blew up a winning roster and made a litany of moves including picking up the star RB from Dallas. That's where the hype originated.

4
deadendpathOP"I'm all about expanding my Chips" - Big L•

I mean... the talking heads were even saying they needed time to gel. We sign Tebow and suddenly we're a perennial dynasty.

-2
Nexus36995•

Tebow had nothing to do with our hype for a Super Bowl. It was our team lighting it up in the preseason, especially Sammy against Green Bay.

3
deadendpathOP"I'm all about expanding my Chips" - Big L•

The hype only existed because of Tebow though.

-1
NostalgicFarmer•

The media does what the media does. They only care about clicks and views. And us fans fell into that hype as well. It wasn't just Tebow that brought the media circus it was ever since the whole Chip will trade the house for Mariota fiasco. There was some analysts that had a level head and said this team was a 4-6 win team at best and were ultimately right. I don't agree with why they said that (no Mariota, Bradford is terrible, no talent) but this team definitely lacks cohesion which was a worry coming into the season and people thought it'd take a game or two before they started to click, but I think the more players you replace in starting positions the longer it takes for them to gel. On paper this looked like a above-average to good team so it was easy for analysts and journalists to hype them up and say after chip just blew up the team he'll come back and win the division. The media hyped us up because it was easy to do and now we have it in all our heads that this is a championship team in Chips eyes and therefore it was Superbowl or bust type of year, but it isn't.

I think another reason people are so pissed off is that people believe this is a championship team in Chip Kelly's eyes. I don't think he believes that, he believes he made the best team he could without the players he wanted off the team and the players he was able to bring in. Contrary to what people believe, Chip wanted Maclin and Mathis back. He wanted McCourty as well. He didn't get everyone he wanted, he got what was available and best to fit his scheme. I think this team is just the mold of the team he wants and it's still a work in progress. Everyone is going crazy saying this is Chip's idea of a great championship winning team and it sucks therefore he sucks. I'm sorry but you can't build a championship team in one offseason. You just can't. Chip is starting from scratch and it won't be for another year or two maybe even three before being a contender. If you could every team would have one right now, and teams wouldn't suck year in and year out. You have to let the team develop. A lot of these guys are still young and not even in their primes yet. Bradford is a work in progress and everyone outside of the team is expecting too much from him this season.

2
Rsubs33•

If Chip wanted Mathis back, why the fuck did he release him? Just saying Mathis would have shown up to camp there isn't a doubt in my mind.

2
NostalgicFarmer•

His agent asked for his release unless he would give him a raise. Chip wanted him and planned on keeping him but they didn't want to give him a raise so his agent said to release him.

0
Rsubs33•

Actually Mathis asked for the Eagles to add performance bonuses to his contract that he we would have to earn since he was out performing his current contract. Mathis then asked for the Eagles to explore trades and Kelly released him when he couldn't trade him. Mathis never threatened to hold out and was fully prepared to be at camp, even had the ticket bought.

3
NostalgicFarmer•

I don't buy that Kelly deals with any kind of contract situations. I think he tells Howie I want this player how can we get him contract-wise. I think Howie declined his contract negotiations or they couldn't come up with a compromise, which lead to his agent asking for a trade. I'm willing to bet anything Chip wanted Mathis back and planned on having him back but I'm guessing what he was asking for was more than the Eagles were willing to give so they gave him what he wanted, a chance to get it somewhere else and he still couldn't get those bonuses anywhere else and even got a cheaper contract in Denver.

I'm fine with it, I knew Tebow was going to get cut because he just wasn't good. I don't get the hype at all either.

The Super Bowl talk was because of how the offense looked with Bradford in the preseason.

1
deadendpathOP"I'm all about expanding my Chips" - Big L•

I know, it only happened because of our exposure, though. Our exposure only happened because of Tebow. He drew a helluva crowd if you weren't there to witness yourself. I was in Philly for two of their PS games and Tebow brought the mania.

preseason eagles, with or without bradford, beat up everybody. Bradford came in briefly and brought it up a level for four series or so. the offensive line clicked, there were holes for the running backs, receivers were open, qbs, found the receivers, receivers did not drop passes, centers did not hike over the head of qbs, Maxwell seemed fine i think, even Rowe played well,... then the first game and everything and everyone did a 180 starting with the o-line.

It was not just that they went 4-0 in the preseason, who cares about the record, perhaps the fourth stringers gave them wins, perhaps they made a ton of mistakes and squeaked out four wins. It was how they won in preseason with 1-3rd stringers rolling over teams, as far as my limited memory remembers. And they played tight, with few mistakes, few mental mistakes, and then the season started and mistakes piled on mistakes, and can only think it started with defensive lines scheming against the eagles in the regular season, whereas they ran their vanilla schemes for more practice in the preseason.

1
deadendpathOP"I'm all about expanding my Chips" - Big L•

I mean we went 3-1 but I get what you mean. Bradford was kicking ass but that was the only point of preseason for us besides getting our secondary figured out.

1
gg_2015•

Would you rather us NOT be hyped and ignored, then bitch and moan about how the media continues to focus on America's Team, the Patriots, the Packers, Odell Beckham, etc and never on us?

It's not the media's job to decide outcomes of games. It is their job, however, to go with what gets the most headlines and clicks. It's our job to do our own research and adjust expectations accordingly. There's no shame on the media. There IS like you said, shame on fans who take a bite out of the media hype pie.

And to conclude, it IS up to the players to play up to the hype. They need to revel in that spotlight. We've shown that we're just not ready for that yet. I love getting and being hyped. It is disappointing to get deflated so quickly watching this team play this year.

and we became Super Bowl favorites prematurely

Who had use as Super Bowl favorites? If anything we kept hearing how Dallas had finally turned the corner. As late as last week we were toast and Dallas still had a chance with Romo coming back despite us having one more win than them.

Did you guys seriously think a team with such a lite WR corps could get through the playoffs?

Get 'through' the playoffs? No. Get to the playoffs? Possibly depending how other things went.

Our defense looked great at first but injuries knocked us down & out.

I wasn't buying our defense was any good until about the 4th or 5th game. Our offensive struggles, however, have been going on all season except for occasional flashes.

Um shefter even picked us as favorites. It was a big deal in august/September.
