Cheap housing non existent?

My boss is giving me the choice of moving to Austin or kansas city, where I am now, but after looking online I can't even find a 1 bedroom for under 700. I mean I could afford it no problem, but it just seems unnecessary when I can find a 1 bedroom here for like 400 a month. Is it really that expensive down there? Is it worth it?
