Shawnee National Forest, Mid December

TRAIL

Hey everyone,

I'm interested in a long weekend hike (4 days, 3 nights) through Shawnee sometime in the next few weeks. I have gone on two ~5 day backpacking trips before, so I'm somewhat experienced, but still a little green.

I love the cold weather, and I am fully aware of the temperatures this time of year in southern illinois. I have heard that Garden of the Gods is a must see, but does anyone have input on the best 30-40 mile section of the River to River Trail to do in the winter?

Also, my only other experiences are in California, where the elevation changes make the distances much more difficult and time consuming. Any comments on daily milage in Shawnee would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance, all comments welcome!
