Names being floated around as potential replacements for DJ Durkin
Here we can compile the rumors of names to be the next Michigan defensive coordinator. Here is what I have read so far:
Greg Jackson: UM secondary coach. Brian Cook and Nick Maumgardner have both said he would be a very good promotion candidate given the improvement in the secondary.
Vic Fangio: Chicago Bears defensive coordinator. Doubt he leaves that gig.
Ed Donatell: Chicago Bears secondary coach. Was the secondary coach in San Francisco as well. Greg Jackson was the assistant secondary coach in SF. This would be a promotion for him, and I think he would take it if offered.
Jim Leavitt: Colorado DC, was USF head coach til for 13 years or so til 2009. Was Harbaugh's LB coach in SF. Some people may be weary of him because he was fired from USF for hitting a player.
Dean Pees: Baltimore Ravens DC. Was also the Patriots DC when they almost ran the table. Was Nick Saban's DC at Michigan State. Apparently pretty good friends with Greg Mattison. If he were to get canned from the Ravens after this season, he could come to Michigan.
Lance Anderson: Stanford DC. Was Harbaugh's DT coach and recruiting coordinator at Stanford. He turned Harbaugh down last year when the gig was to be a co-DC position with Durkin. Now that the job would be all his, maybe he accepts.
Scott Shafer: Recently fired Syracuse head coach. Was Harbaugh's DC at Stanford in 2007. Was RichRod's DC at Michigan in 2008. Was Doug Marrone's DC at Syracuse til he took the Bills job. May want to coach under Harbaugh and try to get his resume built back up after Syracuse.
I believe Harbaugh will go after Fangio first, and I think Fangio will say no. If he wanted back into the college ranks, he'd of joined Jim in UM last year. I'd imagine he likes coaching Chicago's defense.
I think everyone else on that list would say yes to Harbaugh except maybe Anderson. And Shafer will be the last effort of outside candidates I would think.
My personal list of who I would go after first:
-
Fangio
-
Anderson
-
Pees
-
Donatell
-
Jackson
-
Shafer
-
Leavitt
According to Rivals, Harbaugh is on the hunt already to hire a new DC, and could announce a new hire within a week.
