I'm hoping to get some clarity on a possible issue regarding my blood platelet count and taking birth control.

I have been on oral contraception (birth control pill) for the past six years, prescribed by my gynecologist. About four years ago, after receiving abnormal blood tests for my thyroid, I was referred by the gynecologist to an endocrinologist, who diagnosed me with hypothyroidism, Hashimoto's disease. I never experienced any of the typical symptoms of hypothyroidism (except weight gain, but I also come from a family with a history of obesity). I meet with the endocrinologist every six months to review blood tests and ensure that the medication is still working. He is the one who also diagnosed the high cholesterol and vitamin D deficiency. A few visits back (probably about a year ago), I remember that he mentioned that my blood platelets were high. I had had a cold around the time of the blood test, and he said we would keep an eye on them. After that, he never mentioned anything about the platelets.

About a month ago, I received a call from my gynecologist's office, saying that they had received a letter from my insurance company that I had been diagnosed with a blood disorder, and that there was a conflict with my birth control. When they called, I told them that I didn't have a blood disorder, and I called the insurance company. The insurance company asked me what medications I was taking, I mentioned the high cholesterol, and they said that that was why they sent the letter. I have been playing phone tag with my gynecologist since mid-November, and I have yet to talk to her about the reason for the letter (up until now, I thought was high cholesterol).

I received an email yesterday from the endocrinologist's office- an update from my latest appointment with him (last Wednesday). When I logged on to view the notes, I saw that one of my diagnoses included, "D47.3 Essential (hemorrhagic) thrombocythemia," and it clicked- this is what the letter must have been in reference to, and I believe it is due to my blood platelets.

I'm concerned now because I'm not sure if I should discontinue my birth control, or what. I called my gynecologist again today, and despite keeping my phone with me at all times, somehow missed her call at 4:19 (and the answering service kicks on at 4:00 with no way to call her back). I am calling her again first thing in the morning, but I could really use some peace of mind regarding this.

For reference, my recent blood platelet levels have been:

11/20/2015- 420- (lab reference is 150-379 x10E3/uL)

08/11/2015- 426

04/10/2015- 385

Any help is greatly appreciated!
