Are there any stories of Nazi soldiers freeing or trying to free prisoners during the nazi occupation?

I remember a long time ago seeing a commercial on the History Channel for this subject matter but I missed it and have never been able to find anything on the subject. I'm beginning to think I dreamt it.

Is any of this true and where can I read more about it?
