New to gaming and picked Fallout 4. Was that a mistake?

So as the title says, I am new to gaming and bought a new shiny ps4 early this holiday season. I started with the Uncharted Bundle and loved the game play. And then I bought Fallout on the release date and ever since i have been trying really hard to like it but I am failing miserably. I never have any ammunition to fight anyone. I spend way too much time looking for things and still crafted a very shitty settlement. I am just not able to work with the open world concept. It is too overwhelming. Am I approaching it wrong? I really want to understand the love Fallout gets from folks around here. Should I get the survival guide book? Looking for walk through for a game that is not linear sounds like it will take away from the fun. Any advice apart from just give up and get other games?
