Career advice

Been creeping on this subreddit for about a year, never posted and I made a new username because my old one revealed who I was. I was hoping for some advice and opinions on my current career plans and if they will make me more marketable if oil rebounds to some ok level in a year or two. Tryiing to keep this short but thorough:

I graduated in 2014 with a geophysics and geology degree. Took a job geosteering and mudlogging. I took advantage of it by really getting to know MWD, DD, and the mud engineer’s jobs. I interviewed for all those jobs too but I just didn’t really know what they were. My goal was to do that for a few years and hopefully get hired by a production company. I got laid off last March (got 9 months experience) and was fortunate enough to get hired by a non oil related engineering company in April.

Long story short, I became interested in wireline engineering, have done my research and was hoping for some feedback. I was hoping to be with my current company a short time because I figured oil would bounce back (how naïve of me) Right now, I am trying to get as many certs and credentials as possible to help me maybe land a wireline job if oil makes any sort of rebound in a year or two. My company is paying for me to get my Class a CDL, I will get a hazmat endorsement, I have obtained a twic card, have OSHA safety, and looking to get OSHA 40; also have some other safety things that aren’t really relevant. My current company hired me to run this geophysics type probe and they made it sound out to be relatively involved and require math and analysis, but I’ve only done seismic analysis once. When running this equipment, there is some analysis, but it’s just to ensure nothing breaks, I am not making any critical decisions, just acquiring data. I spend a lot of days drilling.

My thought process is if a recruiter sees that I have a lot of mechanical skills, knowledge of engines, building and running tools, running equipment, and a degree with relevant experience, I can act as both a wireline operator, wireline driver, and engineer? Still, I am thinking that a company would just hire someone with wireline experience because there are so many people out of a job right now. Also, I am 25, I don’t want to sit around and hope that there is some rebound when it never comes. A geology degree is pretty much worthless right now. I really don’t want to go get a masters, and I have been thinking about just trying to somehow make a complete career change and somehow get my foot in some door and a nice 9-5 office job. My company will pay for classes starting the new year, but I honestly have no idea what classes to take or how I will make time. Some weeks I barely get 40 hours, others I am out of town for weeks working 12+ hour days. I would like to pursue a career in oil, I just cant right now because of the market. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks
