1998 Chevy S10, possible bad A/C compressor

I bought this little truck and I commute a couple hundred miles a week in it, and on the tail end of my return trip, it began making a low groan when the A/C was engaged. Now a few days later, its squeaking while idling, as well as making a constant low frequency hum while idling and periodically smelling like somethings burning up. Popped the hood, and the A/C compressor definitely sounds like the culprit. I'm short on cash and I think it might be more than a bad bearing, because of the burning smell (maybe the clutch on the compressor?), but I don't have the money for a shop or a new compressor. Is there a way I could disconnect it from electrical power, so I know its not running any longer? Its been off this whole time, but I'm concerned if it burns out, itll seize and everything else will seize with it. I'm just looking for some alternatives to switching the whole thing out right now. I havent been running the A/C since it first became a problem. Thanks.
