The job market for chemists?

I've been reading that jobs in the chemistry field are few and far between. This is particularly true those with degrees in pure chemistry. Do any emoyed/moderately successful chemists/chem-engineers/pharmacists/ect. have any advice or incite they want to give to aspiring students with interest in the central science?
