Women in Kitchens?

Every time I tell people I work in a restaurant, they automatically assume I'm a server. Every single time, without fail. People then find it hard to believe that I work back of house. Not only that, but I get tons of comments from fellow cooks along the lines of "wow I've never worked with a woman in a kitchen before..." Because of these comments, I always feel like I gotta try extra hard to prove myself and have myself taken seriously. Anyone have any experiences with this?
