Thinking about adopting a dog in the next 2 months, should I start the process now?
Background: I've had dogs my whole life and HAVE solely taken care of one of them, so that's not an issue. However, my dog I had for 13 years passed away 6 months ago. Now I'm not 100% sure I can emotionally have another dog yet, but I have started looking online in the last month, and found a dog nearby that I really really like (haven't met yet though, just the online profile), and seems like we would work perfectly together. This is the first time I have felt like getting another dog in years. She's a rescue dog, so I have to schedule an appointment with her foster to meet her. I have never had to go through this process so I am not sure exactly how to proceed.
Problem: I don't want to waste the foster mom's time. I don't want to meet her and decide I'm not emotionally ready, but I'm extremely a logic based person and not used to going on gut feelings, so I wouldn't know if I was 100% ready until I met and interacted with the dog. Also, I am graduating from college in 2 weeks, and starting my career the beginning of January. I would not be able to adopt her until mid January at the earliest, to mid February at the latest because I would want to get everything settled and stable first before I brought her in. I want to meet this dog this Friday because I'll be in town (if the foster mom is able to).
So my question is, is it reasonable to see the dog this soon, or will I just be wasting the foster mom's time? I do not want to be disrespectful or rude at all. Also, what is the likelihood that the dog is still available in the next 2 months? I'm assuming if they find someone they like that can take her sooner than I can, that the other people will get her. Is this correct?
TL;DR: I want to meet this dog Friday because I'll be in town, but because I've never adopted, and I am not 100% sure I want the dog yet (but that's what a meeting is for, right?), and I would have to wait until I move into my new place January and get settled, I am unsure if it would be considered rude, or a waste of time to meet the dog. Or am I okay to send the foster mom an email to see if they can meet?
UPDATE: I decided to wait to meet her until I am able to take her if all goes well. If she gets adopted by someone else between now and then, then I'll just be happy she got adopted into a home!
