New player re-reading rules and would like a clarification regarding Turn Order and Table Edge Selection

Hello folks,
(I'd like to preface this as a stupid question... but I wanted to ask nonetheless because every game of Warmachine I've seen played doesn't follow what I've just read in the rules.) I Was re-reading the free Warmachine rules (as posted on PP's website) as I'm trying to gain deeper knowledge of the game. I decide to start at the beginning and came across the "Two-Player Game" section which details how to determine Turn Order and Table Edge selection. I'll quote the relevant text below.

The player who rolls the highest number chooses which player will be the first player. Players then deploy their armies. The first player chooses any edge of the battlefield and deploys all his forces completely within 10˝ of that edge. This area is the player’s deployment zone. Deploy units so that all their troopers are in formation. The second player then deploys his forces on the opposite side of the battlefield following the same guidelines. After both players have deployed their forces, the first player takes the first turn of the game. Players then alternate taking turns for the rest of the game.

This seems to state that the "first" player gets to chose both the table edge and take the first turn? I was under the impression that the first player took the first turn, but the second player got to choose which table edge they deployed to. Really stupid question and I'm probably reading it wrong.... but any insight would be appreciated. I just want to make sure I haven't been playing wrong.
