Quick question about aftercare

Hey I got my first piercing today and really happy with it its a septum i think i've got the process down well on how to clean it but the piercer told me to leave it 24 hours before cleaning it. I was just wondering if this is normal as i thought this could lead to me getting an infection, any way thanks very much!
