Eye makeup in The Help. How do?

In the movie The Help, no one is wearing eyeliner, but the awesomeness that is their lashes is dense and directed in such a way that it tricks the eye. I have eye & eye needs more like January Jones/Betty Draper (Mad Men) than Emma Stone/Skeeter - my eyes are vey deep set. I own RollerLash and about a dozen other mascaras, and a lot of them are fantastic (surprisingly, ELF is always best). But is there a special technique for making eyes look bigger & brighter, either with mascara or a secretive eyeliner application? I'm thinking it might be that they put mascara only on the outer lashes, and tight line? I dunno. Do you know?
