Resolution - Advice Required - Apply Within!

Good day,

Just looking for a bit of advice regarding the resolution of a story. Basically I'm a cynical bastard. 9 out of 10 times* The feedback I'm receiving for the screenplay I'm currently working on often points out that the film should have a positive, upbeat, victorious ending. Currently let's just say after his trails and tribulations my protagonist makes a cowardly decision at the climax of the film. No heroism, no love conquers all.

Personally I feel that an escapist, everything is a okay ending poses less questions than the alternative.

Can anyone point me in the direction of good screenplays with downbeat endings that work?
