7yr old nephew asked for books for xmas, what should I get him?

I was surprised, he asked me for books on his christmas list. He still has a difficult time reading but he's working on it.

Right now I think he's reading Diary of a wimpy kid. I thought about getting him captain underpants but heard the characters are pretty rude to the principal and talk back etc.

Anything appropriate for him?
