Me (27f) with my SO (31m) and our 3yo son. Disagreement regarding x-mas presents
To keep it short, our son turned 3 not too long ago. I budgeted the money for his presents and managed to get him the stuff that I wanted to give him, my SO wants us to give separate presents. He did not save any money and ended up co-giving a very nice gift with his father.
Now x-mas is coming up and I'm looking at stuff to buy for him, nothing overly expensive, I'll probably end up spending about 100-150$ on his gifts. He is not spoiled, gifts are reserved for special occasions (ie b-day and x-mas), he never demands things and he is overall a very content, polite little human.
Now, my SO is saying he doesn't know if he'll be able to afford any presents. Okay, I think we can just give them together and I'll pay for them but this seems to hurt his pride, he wants to provide for his son. He has about 350$ left and some of that does need to go towards food but I doubt all of it needs to go there seeing as I get payed a week before x-mas and will chip in my half of the monthly food money then.
The issue is he keeps shooting my ideas down, it's too expensive, it's unnessecary, he'd rather spend on x-mas food. Now call me crazy if you want to but I feel that, to me, it's more important to buy nice gifts for our son instead on lavishing on x-mas food. We will be getting tons of left overs from both of our parents and adding up our food budget (usually 150$ each for a month) I can't see how we need to spend 500$ on food this month.
Setting that aside I feel that I should be able to spend my left over money on gifts for our child if I want to, I want to make the holidays special not necessarily just with gifts but they are included. Other things I spend on are christmas decorations (nothing crazy, I haven't even spent anything yet but will probably end up buying stuff for about 30-40$). I don't think this is unreasonable.
Something that may be contributing to this disagreement is that my SO really doesn't like x-mas. He grew up with his mom who never could afford to buy him things, she was (is) a narcissistic alcoholic and his holidays growing up were pretty miserable. I'm on the other end of the spectrum, my parents were upper middle-class, our house looked like Santas village every year and there was love, warmth, laughter and that special sense of magic that I want our son to experience.
I get that he is resentful for how his childhood was, and I get that he doesn't feel the need for going the extra mile just for a holiday but if our son has the possibility of experiencing that special feeling x-mas can give, I want to do what I can to contribute to that.
(Our finances are set up so we pay half the bills, half the rent and half the food each. The money that is left over we spend on things that are needed or on things that make us happy. I am well off with an inheritance and a decent monthly wage. He struggles to budget his money for the necessities and I help him out when needed, as does his well off father. I do not hold my money over his head, I'm very giving but he has his pride... He has never been able to hang on to money for any amount of time. We plan on being together for the rest of our lives but neither of us want to get married, and we also both want to keep our finances separated except for the shared costs.)
I know that he feels his "manhood" is hurt because he wants so bad to be the bread winner but I don't think our sons holiday should suffer for it.
I just don't know, we aren't fighting over it exactly but it is creating a bit of tension. Is either of us being unreasonable? I understand his side but I also (obviously) understand mine. Does anyone have any wisdom to impart on our issue?
Tl;dr: my SO doesn't want to spend on gifts for our son but I do. What do?
