Joining the Peace Corps for the wrong reasons?
I'm thinking about joining the PC but I understand they are very selective about who they take (and the process is super lengthy, like a year or two?) and so they probably try to weed people out who want to join for the "wrong" reasons.
I'm not sure my reasons are the best, and want to know what you think.
First, I have traveled extensively in my life, like years at a time studying/working/backpacking/etc. on just about every continent, probably something like 6-7 years cumulatively, all over the world. I love it and I want to do it some more; would joining the PC just to be out in the world (as opposed to pure altruism) be a bad reason to do it? I mean I'm happy to help people, but if I'm being honest I'm more into just seeing a new place and taking in the life/culture/food/language/etc. than anything else; is this bad?
Also, I know there are better ways to make money, but the $8k would be nice, my life is such that it would be really convenient to just take off and do PC for two years then come back to $8k (maybe $10k if I can save some stipend). I'm working on a degree and could easily take a break from it and having money when I came back would be great and help me continue.
Are money and travel wrong reasons for wanting to join?
