How did Christianity felt when humanity first reached the sky?

What I mean by this is, how did the Christian people and church officials responded when human kind first reached the sky. Christians believe in heaven, and heaven is seen as a utopia located above the clouds, therefore, at some point in history, humanity must of thought that heaven was up there but they just couldn't reach the sky. What about when planes and space shuttles were first invented and we were able to reach the sky and all that followed? Is there any historic writing that explains the emotions of the people at the time of the events? And did the church officials tried endlessly to come up with an answer as to why there was nothing there? I am not too knowledgeable when it comes to religion so please excuse me if I'm missing any logical answer or if this comes off as insensitive to the religion.
