Help me choose fabric and floss

So, I have a copy of The Birds and the Bees from Ink Circles and figure that's going to be my next project.

The problem is that I can't decide on what fabric and floss I want to use. I like the subtle variegation look of the sample, but not the muddiness.

Give me some suggestions! Fabric-wise, I tend to like linens and evenweaves, but am open to anything you think might look good. Floss wise, I'll use everything from regular DMC floss to hand dyed threads to silks to... whatever.
