Setting up a LAN party... I need advice!

###Looking to set up a LAN party! ..and I need your help..

#The planning Recently I've been thinking up some ideas for a LAN party. As a lot of my friends game on PC, or at least have capable PCs, it's dawned on me that this could very well become a reality. It's also dawned on me that I have no idea where to start.

#Why am I calling to Reddit?

I don't have the social skills to do this alone. Of course, it'd be possible to do without any experience, but I wouldn't know what to prepare for. I'm calling any and all experienced in setting up/attending LAN parties to my aid.

#What I need help with: I don't know various things that I feel are essential to a LAN party. I just need a few people to share their knowledge and/or experiences so this doesn't go horribly wrong.

I ask of the following:

1. What games are most suitable for playing over LAN?

2. What is the optimal amount of people for most games?

3. What should I do to prepare.

4. Any advice for setting them up?

#Finally... Thank you in advance! For your help, I'll thank you with pictures of the final result if it all goes according to plan! It's not much of a thank you present, but hey, it's something. I'm definitely looking forward see to what I can accomplish, and I really hope that I can do this more often.
