One Night Revolution. Are we missing something?

I absolutely love social deduction games and The Resistance is one of my favorites, so I knew I had to pick up One Night Revolution when the Kickstarter came out. I hadn't played Werewolf or ONUW but knew that ONR was supposed to be similar, if not better than ONUW.

My friends and I (6 of us total) played last week and while we enjoyed it, it wasn't quite... there. The game just felt like it lacked the substance that we enjoy in other games and one of my friends specifically pointed out how secretly being switched from spy to resistance or resistance to spy isn't something he likes. I tried to convince him that finding out what side you're on is part of the game, but he didn't care for it because he felt like it made your choices meaningless.

We haven't played it since and I'm not sure if we will, but it super bums me out because I was really excited about it. Are we missing an element of the game that we haven't considered? What have your experiences been?
