[Win10]Recovering data after system recovery

My wife's computer updated and started getting repeated critical errors about the start menu and cortana not working. I thought I could restore it to a previous restore point and that would be it. However, I clicked system recovery, which started re-installing Windows 10. I hit the power button, which I know not to normally do, but we hadn't backed up in a while. It was too late. I can't boot to windows 10 at all and any other options fail. I have a copy of Ultimate Boot CD on a flash drive that I use for most tasks. I can recover the photos, but not the documents. What can I do short of sending the drive to a clean room company and spending a ton of money? I'm freaking out.
